PARENTS AS PARTNERS
IN EARLY LEARNING PROJET(PPEL)

<< back   >> February update
One of the many exciting activities that have been delivered by the Parents as Partners in Early Learning Project (PPEL) has been looking at supporting very young children’s personal social and emotional development. During the Autumn term two Centres – Aylesbury Early Years Centre, and 1st Place Children and Parents Centre in Walworth participated in a joint training programme. Parents from the two Centres attended a 7-week course on Saturday mornings looking at Schemas (understanding their children’s behaviour patterns and how to support them). At the same time staff attended training in how to work with parents to best support children’s personal, social and emotional development (PSED).

On completion of the courses parents and staff at the Aylesbury Early Years Centre, and at 1st Place have worked together to develop new ways of sharing information about their children and are developing new ways of supporting parents to contribute information.

At the Aylesbury Early Years Centre parents and staff have decided to start by looking at the pre-admission and settling- in procedures at the nursery. They have worked together to develop a new way of collecting information from parents about what it is that makes their child unique – and what their hopes and aspirations are for their child. This will form the basis of a lasting and true partnership between parents and staff at the nursery – supporting the child through sharing information from home and from the nursery and working together to ensure that each child achieves to the very best of their ability.

    Bengali Childminders
16 Bengali Childminders from the Walworth area have just completed their training in PSED and proudly received their certificates this week. Parallel training for Bengali parents – mothers and fathers together - looking at Schemas and how to understand and support their children’s play and behaviour patterns has been taking place at the same time on Saturday mornings since January.

A celebration day to share their learning and enjoy their achievements together is planned for March.

In the Picture video project has been training and supporting other parents to film and record all the activities described above as well as the other parts of the one year programme, and this will be put together in a DVD that will be widely available for parents and early years staff and practitioners in Southwark.
